Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has set up an inquiry committee to probe the team’s dismal performance in the ongoing Asia Cup in Jakarta. The committee has been developed after the national team had failed to qualify for the next year’s World Cup. The team’s unfortunate performance has sparked widespread criticism by netizens on social media. They highlighted questions like why the team was not given a chance to qualify for the semi-finals.
The probe committee is comprised of three members. Two members of the inquiry committee, Kaleemullah, and Nasir Ali, are also national selectors. Both of them were among those who approved 20-member team. During an hour-and-a-half briefing that featured head coach Siegfried Aikman. Zahir Shah of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Hockey Association is also a member of the investigating committee.
The reports are saying that the Dutch coach seeks complete control over team selection. Therefore he remains responsible for causing a schism between him and the selection committee.
The national selection committee did not announce the team, which toured Europe in March, before the Asia Cup. However, for the Asia Cup the team management, headed by Aikman briefed the selectors on his decision of picking the players.
While constituting the investigative committee, Pakistan Hockey Federation President Brig (retd.) Khalid Sajjad Khokhar sought a report by June 20 in order to take action against the responsible persons.
Pakistan will not be at a World Cup for the second time. They also failed to qualify for the 2014 edition.
